What is Organized Crime? |
The crisis of organized crime has been around since man first learned to communicate. Organized crime, as defined by the Federal Buraeu of Investigation, is "…any group having some manner of a formalized structure and whose primary objective is to obtain money through illegal activities…maintaining their position through the use of… violence, corruption… and extortion: generally having a significant impact on [Society]… as a whole." This definition is representative of all criminal enterprises: including the Italian Mafia, South American Cartels, African American Drug Gangs, and Terrorist Groups like ISIS. While the Mafia has declined in recent years, the other three pose an enormous threat to the country today.

La Cosa NostraKNOWING THE BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND THE END
La Cosa Nostra, Italian for "Our Thing," is just one of the names given to the criminl enterprise controlled by Italian Americans. Tracing its roots back to Sicily for hundreds of years, the Mafia did not become a major threat in America until the 1920s with Prohibition as Italian Immigrants saw financial opportunity in illicit business. Their presence continued even after the passage of the Twenty-First Amendment, as they began to exploit other means of racketeering. For more information about La Cosa Nostra, its rise, and decline, check out this Forbes Article on the Apalachin Meeting.
